Chapter 15: The Husband Is Always Right
Could it be that my husband deliberately said that because he knew I liked it and wanted to save it all for me to eat?
The little girl blinked her long lashes, as if suddenly enlightened.
A sweet smile involuntarily appeared on her face.
With that thought, she carefully wrapped up the remaining pieces of cake again.
Her husband treated her well, so she must also treat him well.
She wanted to save them to share with her husband!
...
In the main room, after quickly taking a hot shower, Xu An felt completely revitalized.
He then prepared to start cooking.
Meanwhile, in the bedroom, the little girl saw Xu An heading to the kitchen and hurriedly limped out.
“H-Husband!”
“Yan’er, why are you out? Didn’t I tell you not to wander around?”
“B-But... my husband is a scholar. People say a gentleman stays away from the kitchen. Your hands are for writing, how can you cook? Cooking should be my job since I’m your wife!”
“Yan’er, that’s a flawed idea. Gentlemen are human too. Do gentlemen not eat or should they always be served by others? There’s no such entitlement in this world!”
Xu An looked at Su Yan’er seriously.
“Don’t listen to such nonsense anymore. Besides, I’m not even a gentleman yet. The important thing is for you to rest your leg properly. Leave everything else to me.”
“But...”
“No buts. Obey me.”
With that, Xu An took the ingredients into the kitchen.
Su Yan’er pursed her lips and obediently sat down on the bench inside.
In the kitchen, Xu An worked methodically.
Cooking was very easy for him.
His workplace was far from home, and living alone, he had no choice but to cook for himself.
Over time, his cooking skills gradually improved.
Though not quite at the level of a Michelin three-star chef, everyone who had tasted his food had given him a thumbs-up.
This time, he bought three pounds of lean pork and over a dozen eggs in the city. Xu An planned to make three dishes and one soup from these ingredients.
The first dish was steamed egg custard.
Once done, a little soy sauce made it the perfect complement to rice.
The second dish was spicy stir-fried pork, a dish that had been wildly popular in the previous life.
No one could resist it!
The third dish was chive scrambled eggs.
Tomatoes didn’t exist in this era yet, but chives did.
The chives planted by the original owner’s father were still thriving.
Fortunately, the original owner was lazy and ignorant about grains, spending his days just reciting meaningless phrases.
Otherwise, with his character, Xu An might not have had the chance to enjoy them.
The last dish was naturally lean pork and egg soup.
Half an hour later, Xu An had finished preparing the three dishes and one soup, and the rice steaming in the pot was ready.
He then began to place the dishes and soup beautifully on the dining table, ready to eat.
The little girl stared in amazement at the full table of food!
Was it New Year’s already?
Her husband had actually cooked so many dishes!
And his culinary skills were wonderful.
The aroma was even more enticing than the scents wafting from the city’s restaurants!
Su Yan’er swallowed hard.
In the past, such a feast could only be had on New Year’s.
Moreover, she was not allowed to sit at the table.
She could only pick at some food and eat alone in a corner.
The tastiest dishes were never offered to her by her aunt.
So she mostly just watched and couldn’t eat.
Xu An filled a bowl with rice for the little girl and smiled, “Yan’er, you must be starving. Come, eat!”
Su Yan’er looked at Xu An in a daze.
It felt unreal!
She feared it was just a dream.
That when she woke up, she would be back to her previous miserable fate.
“What are you daydreaming about? Eat!”
Xu An gently tapped her head with a hint of helplessness.
“Oh, o-okay, husband!”
The little girl quickly came to her senses and showed a heartfelt smile.
His touch was real.
This was not a dream—it was all true!
Heaven had truly blessed her with such a wonderful husband!
“Here, Yan’er, try this steamed egg custard!”
Xu An scooped a spoonful and brought it to her lips.
“Yummy~”
Just as the little girl was about to open her mouth, she suddenly thought of something and bowed her head, saying, “Husband, I’ll feed myself.”
“What’s wrong?” Xu An asked curiously.
“They say the husband is like the sky; only the wife serves the husband. How can the husband serve the wife? I’m your wife, so I should serve you. If word gets out, it could harm your reputation.”
Xu An smiled.
With the original owner’s reputation, did it really need protecting?
The little girl continued confidently, “Besides, if my sister found out, she’d be unhappy. Others would laugh at you.”
“I know you treat me well, husband, but I can’t let you become the subject of ridicule.”
Xu An hadn’t expected that simply feeding the little girl some steamed egg custard would make her think so much. He couldn’t help but smile wryly.
It seemed this little girl needed proper guidance.
Her thinking was too conservative; she needed to embrace more modern ideas.
“Yan’er, let me ask you, whose wife are you?”
“I... I’m your wife!”
“So, shouldn’t you listen to me more in the future?”
Without hesitation, the little girl nodded vigorously, “Yes!”
Xu An gently pinched her cheek and smiled, “Have you heard the saying: ‘Are princes and generals born of noble stock?’”
The little girl shook her head, puzzled.
She knew the first part about princes and generals—they were important officials—but the rest was too profound for her to grasp.
Her husband was truly a learned man.
Xu An explained gently, “It means that those princes and generals weren’t born noble. They and their ancestors all started from humble beginnings.”
“So, we should learn to distinguish and think critically about these entrenched ideas.”
“For example, the saying ‘the husband is greater than the sky, and the wife follows the husband’ is a typical enslaving thought. We shouldn’t accept that. Men and women are equal and should respect each other.”
“Therefore, what others say isn’t really important. As long as we don’t break the law or harm others, we can do whatever we want. That’s how we live freely and happily.”
The little girl listened intently, deeply absorbed.
Yet, she felt her husband’s words were quite different from what others told her.
He said men and women are equal and should respect each other.
But she grew up hearing that women must serve men as a matter of course.
She suddenly felt confused!
But soon, her mind cleared.
Her husband was so kind and learned; what he said must be right, and she should listen to him.
The others outside were wrong because they said things different from her husband!
With that thought, the little girl suddenly looked up, blinking her bright eyes at Xu An.
“Yes, husband, I understand now.”
The little girl really was quick-witted.
She grasped it so fast.
Xu An was filled with satisfaction.
Before he could say anything more, the little girl said brightly, “I want to eat steamed egg custard. Husband, feed me!”
Xu An: “...”
