When Lu Miao arrived at the café, Xu Jin and Wang Gege had just gotten there as well.

“Miao Miao, over here,” Wang Gege waved to her, and she walked over.

Xu Jin picked up her bag to make room. “You came pretty fast, Miao Miao. I thought we’d be waiting for ages.”

“My driver was quite good today,” Lu Miao smiled as she sat down and called the waiter to place their order.

She took out her breakfast, and Wang Gege glanced at it. “Miao Miao, are you going to eat all that by yourself?”

Only then did Lu Miao realize it might be a bit much. Instantly aware of the implication, she gave an awkward smile.

Fortunately, the café had hot drinks and desserts, which she shared with her girlfriends.

“Miao Miao, I heard Wang Mingcheng has been released,” Wang Gege said, her tone suddenly serious, shifting from earlier chatter about the handsome guys at last night’s party that Lu Miao sadly missed.

Lu Miao was taken aback. “What? Wasn’t he arrested for involvement in vice, gambling, and drugs?”

She hadn’t followed the details; the news had been tightly controlled.

Wang Gege’s father was a head of a relevant department and had gotten the information in advance.

Xu Jin stirred her coffee. “Maybe the evidence wasn’t enough. The Wang family pulled some serious strings to get him out.”

Though the Wang clan had fallen, their old connections remained, and since he was their only precious son, they’d do whatever it took to protect him.

Wang Gege warned her, “Miao Miao, you better be careful. Now that he’s out, watch out for any twisted revenge.”

Before Lu Miao could respond, Xu Jin scoffed. “Wang Mingcheng doesn’t have the guts.”

“He’s just a spoiled heir backed by his family. Now that the Wang family’s gone, where does he get the confidence to act out?”

“You can’t be too trusting. My dad deals with this stuff—he says many criminals appear meek on the surface but are deeply twisted inside. When pushed to the edge, what won’t they do?”

“Wang Gege, stop with your victim complex. You’re scaring Miao Miao into silence,” Xu Jin said, patting Lu Miao’s shoulder. “Don’t worry. Such a minor character isn’t worth your concern.”

Listening to their discussion about Wang Mingcheng, Lu Miao thought to herself that any revenge from him was pointless. The real issue was the crisis facing the Wang family. If she were smart, she’d seek out that man to beg him to spare them.

At that moment, her phone vibrated. She received a text from an unknown number.

“I’ll be out of town for a couple of days. Stay home and behave.”

Reading it twice, Lu Miao focused on the key point: “How do you have my number?”

The reply came instantly: “Your uncle gave it to me.”

She was speechless. She suspected Lu Yan had been kidnapped by this man—how else could he have given him everything? Did she have any privacy left?

Fu Shiyue saw she hadn’t replied for a long time and sternly reminded her, “Don’t wander around tonight. Lock the doors at home. Call me if anything happens.”

“Okay, got it,” she typed.

Fu Shiyue raised an eyebrow at those few words. Seeing her so obedient, he knew she wouldn’t behave for long. Now that he was finally free, knowing Lu Miao’s nature, she’d probably sneak out to party tonight.

…

At ten o’clock that night, a group was drinking and singing in a private room.

Lu Miao’s phone rang, and seeing the number, she hung up immediately.

A moment later, it vibrated again, this time sending a photo of her singing in the room!

A chill ran down her spine. She glanced outside the door and immediately dropped the microphone, heading to the restroom.

Cut off from the loud music, the silence was overwhelming as she dialed the number.

Once connected, before the other spoke, she snapped, “You actually sent someone to follow me?”

The man calmly explained, “The property management said you hadn’t returned home. I called you, but you didn’t pick up, so I had to send someone to find you.”

Fu Shiyue knew she hadn’t come home so late and had tried calling several times, all hung up. Such rebellious behavior showed she was lost in her fun. Without special measures, he couldn’t reel in this free-spirited butterfly.

“Damn control freak. Does your family run an internet café? You’re out of town, yet you control everything, even dragging in my neighborhood’s property management,” Lu Miao muttered, only for him to overhear but not argue.

“I have to ensure your safety,” he said seriously.

Lu Miao had nothing to say.

Fearing he’d launch into some guardian routine, she softened her tone and negotiated, “It’s Friday. No class tomorrow. I’ll play for one more hour, then come back.”

“It’s late already. Not another minute,” he replied firmly.

He wasn’t interested in bargaining. “I sent someone to pick you up. They should be at the door now.”

Lu Miao’s eyes went wide.

This man showed no mercy, not even leaving room for compromise.

She hung up and stepped out of the restroom to see a tall figure standing by the door.

Grinding her teeth, she greeted the others on the sofa, grabbed her bag and coat, and left the private room.

Shen Lü had received a call from Fu Shiyue to pick someone up. Curious who she was, he looked inside just as the door opened. A girl in a black dress stepped out.

Her clear black-and-white eyes glanced at him.

Meeting the young girl’s pure gaze, he was slightly surprised. “You’re Lu Yan’s little niece?”

Lu Miao lifted her chin, expressionless.

He studied her innocent face. “No wonder our Fifth Brother watches over you so closely.”

So beautiful—he had to keep a close eye on her to prevent some young man from setting his sights on her.

At this moment, Lu Miao was quite displeased. She gave the man a sharp look and walked around him.

…

In the neighboring city, the sky was pitch black, rain pouring down in torrents.

The mountaintop had been surrounded. A fugitive was holding a family of three hostage, standoff with the police lasting eight hours.

Just moments ago, a gunshot rang out. Fu Shiyue ended the mission ahead of schedule.

He removed his bulletproof vest and sat in the car lighting a cigarette. The smoke helped mask the blood scent clinging to him.

Just as he reached for his phone to call Lu Miao, Shen Lü’s call came through.

“The young lady has been safely delivered home.”

Fu Shiyue glanced at the bloodstains on his sleeve and frowned. “Nothing else?”

Shen Lü thought he meant Lu Miao’s condition. “She was silent the whole ride, probably mad that you told her to go home. She kept a sour face and didn’t say a word.”

Trying to lighten the mood during the drive home, Shen Lü attempted to make small talk but was met with coldness. It frustrated him—he was terrible at dealing with girls.

He couldn’t help but complain to Fu Shiyue, “Who let her develop such a bad temper…”

Fu Shiyue interrupted with a grave tone, “I asked if there was anything unusual.”

Only then did Shen Lü realize he was worried about Lu Miao’s safety.

“I watched her go inside. If you’re worried, I can stay downstairs until the lights go out.”

Fu Shiyue frowned slightly.

Even with Shen Lü’s help, not watching over Lu Miao personally left him uneasy.

At that moment, a knock came on the car window.

Fu Shiyue ended the call and rolled down the window.

The police chief stood respectfully. “Captain Fu, you’ve worked hard tonight. We’ve arranged accommodations for you. Rest up well, and we’ll escort you back early tomorrow.”

Fu Shiyue looked out at the fog shrouding the mountain and, worried about Lu Miao alone at home, said, “No need. I’m leaving now.”

The chief was surprised. “Now?”

Fu Shiyue stubbed out his cigarette and started the engine.

The chief looked at his resolute face. “It’s past midnight, pouring rain. You’re heading back?”

“There’s something important at home.”

Tonight, Fu Shiyue’s eyelids twitched uncontrollably.

He had a faint premonition that something was about to happen.
