Chapter 39: A Treasure of Inestimable Value
Xiao Ran and Elaine walked straight into the living room, beginning to examine, appraise, and estimate the value of the numerous auction items displayed there.
They started in the reception area, turning their attention to the items arranged on the coffee table. These included a delicate set of coffee pots and cups, a small figurative sculpture, two gilt-bronze three-branched candelabras, two exquisite antique mantel clocks, and various other trinkets. The items were scattered across the table, filling it completely. The square cherry-wood coffee table, the rug beneath it, the sofas in the reception area, the lamps, side tables, and all the decorative accessories were also up for auction.
Xiao Ran had no interest in the French court-style furniture, which was of decent quality. As soon as he entered the area, his gaze fixed on the small sculpture. It was a marble piece, only about forty centimeters tall, depicting David. As David was one of the three kings of Israel and considered the greatest king by the Jewish people, it was perfectly normal to find such a sculpture in the home of a Jewish ultra-wealthy individual. Of course, this was not the David created by Michelangelo, but a replica. Though a reproduction, it was crafted with some refinement and appeared to have a bit of history rather than being a modern copy. The viewers in the livestream also recognized it as a replica, and no one took much interest. No one expected a repeat of the miracle that occurred when Xiao Ran previously bought an ordinary Venus sculpture only to discover it was a masterpiece.
Xiao Ran glanced at the sculpture and then moved on to an antique mantel clock nearby. It looked small and elegant, made of gilt bronze, with a golden angel statue on top. It was in excellent condition and seemed to keep accurate time, perfectly matching the current hour. In Xiao Ran’s eyes, however, this small gilt-bronze clock emitted a red glow, though the brightness was mediocre. This confirmed it was indeed an antique over a century old, but its value was not particularly high.
"Sean, this clock appears to be an antique. The manufacturer's mark on the back shows it’s from London, England, dating back to the late nineteenth century," Elaine introduced briefly, having clearly examined it already. "But as for its specific value or whether it’s worth collecting, I’m not sure."
Following her introduction, Xiao Ran gently picked up the small clock to check the back. Sure enough, there was a brass plaque engraved with the maker's mark and the year of manufacture. It was just as Elaine had said. Xiao Ran studied the mark, then smiled and said in a low voice, "Here we go! Everyone, look up this manufacturer online. It would be perfect if you could find an identical antique clock! If this gilt-bronze piece is worth a significant amount and holds collector value, I might consider bidding on it. If it’s not worth the effort, I won't waste my energy!"
Before he had even finished speaking, the viewers in the livestream responded. "Don't worry, Xiao Ran, leave it to us. We’ll find the details and value of this clock in no time." With that, they began taking screenshots and getting to work.
Xiao Ran nodded and looked at the other clock nearby. It was also a small, delicate antique, though its value was relatively average. As before, Xiao Ran asked his fans to help research it. Those interested in the piece would naturally be diligent in their search. Even if the item lacked significant collector value or if they failed to win it due to a high price, the learning process itself was a pleasure. That was why everyone was so enthusiastic and tireless.
As they spoke, they began to examine the set of coffee pots. It was the famous German Meissen porcelain, crafted with exquisite detail. Each piece was painted with a beautiful scene, and every scene told a story. Xiao Ran recognized them instantly; the designs were all taken from the famous Arabian Nights collection.
"Sean, this is the famous German Meissen porcelain, the 'Arabian Nights' series," Elaine noted. "As far as I know, the series was created by Meissen in the twentieth century and is very popular. I’m not sure when this specific set was produced, but it’s certainly expensive."
A small stir rippled through the livestream. "I've heard of Meissen porcelain, but I didn't expect it to be this exquisite—it has such a rich, exotic flair," a female fan remarked, clearly tempted.
Before she could finish, a user nicknamed "Cat Hiding in the Corner" chimed in: "I just looked up the Meissen 'Arabian Nights' series. If it’s authentic, it's extremely expensive. If you want to win this set, it’s going to cost a fortune!"
In the living room, Xiao Ran checked the tag on the coffee pot and shook his head slightly. "This batch of Meissen porcelain has already been authenticated; it’s genuine without a doubt! I advise you all not to set your sights on it. Every professional treasure hunter here will be going after it, especially since it’s the classic 'Arabian Nights' series. Under these circumstances, the price is bound to be driven very high. There's no bargain to be found here!" At his words, several sighs echoed in the livestream. Everyone knew he was right and gave up the idea of purchasing the set.
Next, Xiao Ran inspected the two gilt-bronze three-branched candelabras. They were beautifully crafted in the Baroque style, engraved with intricate, lovely patterns and depictions of Prometheus. To Xiao Ran, both candelabras radiated a red light of moderate intensity. He concluded they were late-nineteenth-century antiques, but of little value. He had no interest in them, nor any intention to bid. The fans in the livestream felt the same way.
Afterward, Xiao Ran looked at other items in the living room, but unfortunately, he found no antiques or art pieces that particularly moved him. He had no interest in the antique furniture, rugs, and other household goods, and he didn't want to waste time on them. Having finished the living room, he led Elaine toward the family room and the dining area. There, they saw more Meissen porcelain, antique silver tableware, and various other items.
In the blink of an eye, forty minutes had passed. They hadn't finished viewing all the auction items yet and were still browsing. Fortunately, Xiao Ran was prepared and had brought several power banks, so he wasn't worried about the livestream being interrupted. The night owls in the chat remained highly engaged, discussing everything heatedly.
During this time, Xiao Ran discovered several good items, including three antique Patek Philippe watches, as well as antique timepieces from high-end brands like Vacheron Constantin and Glashütte. There were both men’s and women’s models, all in excellent condition. Their appearance caused quite a stir in the chat. Led by users like "Rich Guy" and "Half-Dreaming," the group urged Xiao Ran to bid on all of them once they were confirmed as authentic. Even if he couldn't get them all, they insisted he at least secure the three Patek Philippes. Even Xiao Ran himself felt tempted, wanting to win one or two for his own collection. He agreed readily, preparing to bid on these valuable antique watches.
As they talked, Xiao Ran and Elaine reached the door of a room on the second floor. Elaine introduced it briefly, "Sean, this is a study. It contains a large number of books and some antique furniture. Besides these, there are two small safes in the room; they are also auction items, but they come with certain additional conditions."
As they stepped into the study, a sudden, blinding golden light flashed before Xiao Ran’s eyes—so bright it made him dizzy for a moment. Xiao Ran froze, a wave of ecstasy washing over him.
"My god! An antique from over a thousand years ago, and a priceless treasure at that! This trip was well worth it—there really is a major discovery in this mansion!"
