Chapter One: The Model and the Poor Young Man
Page 1/3
In a first-tier city in southern China, Yuehai City.
Noon, April 27, 2017.
Inside an ordinary restaurant, nearly every man’s gaze was fixed on a table by the window. Some glanced furtively, others openly, all with eyes full of longing.
At the window table sat a man and a woman.
The man appeared just over twenty years old, with delicate, refined features—though still within the bounds of average looks. He wore a plainly cheap outfit.
The woman, however, was stunningly beautiful. She was about twenty-four or twenty-five years old, roughly 1.67 meters tall, with skin as fair and smooth as jade. Her fox-like, alluring phoenix eyes were especially captivating. Her tousled short hair lent her a slightly languid air.
Her face was enchanting, her figure voluptuous yet not a trace overweight. Below her slender waist were a pair of enticing long legs, and her chest curved proudly, giving off a supple, almost boneless grace, rich with feminine charm.
The men in the restaurant were all visibly stunned, admiring that proud figure and the peach-blossom-like beauty of her oval face, as if an intoxicating fragrance emanated from her. In their hearts, they sighed: a true earthly goddess.
Lin Chen looked at the beautiful woman before him, who was giving him an ancient book, and asked curiously, “Sister Xi Xi, what made you suddenly think of giving me this?”
The beauty opposite him smiled and said, “I went to the antique street yesterday and saw this book. It looks quite old. The seller said it’s an ancient Chinese medicine text. I remembered you seemed interested in traditional medicine, and it wasn’t expensive, so I bought it for you.”
Lin Chen felt touched; he hadn’t expected her to remember something he mentioned casually.
Two years ago, he left his village alone and came to this big city. After a clichéd heroic rescue, she had already helped him so much.
He recalled how he almost saw Su Xiran dragged into an alley by a drunkard. He picked up a brick and charged, knocking the man down. That heroic rescue was so ordinary it almost bored him.
But afterward, Su Xiran took good care of him and helped him a lot. Without her, his first night in the city would have been under an overpass.
The book on the table had yellowed pages, seemingly very old, though it was more likely a forged antique. Genuine antiques were rare and expensive nowadays.
On the cover were four bold characters written in a lively, sweeping style: “Secrets of the Eastern Flow.”
Regardless of the book’s authenticity, those four characters carried a grand, majestic aura. Even someone like Lin Chen, who knew nothing of calligraphy, felt a sense of freedom and dominance in them.
He carefully put the book away and solemnly told Su Xiran, “Sister Xi Xi, you’ve been so kind to me. One day, I will make a name for myself and repay you!”
Su Xiran tucked a lock of hair behind her ear and smiled gently. “Silly boy, I don’t need you to repay me. Don’t always think about making a name for yourself. Just take care of yourself, and I’ll be happy.”
Lin Chen smiled but felt a weight in his heart. Someone like him, with no background and no education, trying to succeed in a big city like Yuehai—how could that be easy? It sounded unrealistic.
He glanced at Su Xiran’s beaming face and silently clenched his teeth. Difficult or not, there are always people who succeed in this world. Why can’t that person be me?
They continued eating. Lin Chen occasionally told jokes to make Su Xiran laugh. Seeing her radiant smile made him happy, and he paid no mind to the jealous, murderous looks from the other men in the restaurant, who wished they could replace him.
After the meal, they parted ways, and Lin Chen returned alone to the company.
The company was called Qixing Modeling Agency, somewhat well-known in Yuehai City. Su Xiran was its top print model. Lin Chen, introduced by Su Xiran, worked as an assistant in the photography department. Though called an assistant, his job was mostly running errands and doing odd jobs.
“Hey, someone’s come back after dining on the beautiful Su’s soft rice?” As Lin Chen entered the office, a sarcastic voice rang out.

Lin Chen frowned slightly and turned to look at a man not far away playing on his phone.
This man was Huang Wenbin, the company’s chief photographer, twenty-eight years old, wearing glasses, with a refined appearance. But those who knew Huang Wenbin well called him a typical “refined scoundrel.”
It was said many women seeking to enter the print modeling industry, as well as some models vying for more opportunities, were willing to sleep with Huang Wenbin, who accepted them all without refusal.
Huang was lecherous to a fault, but he was good at photography. The company turned a blind eye to his behavior as long as he caused no trouble—it was a consensual matter after all.
He disliked Lin Chen because of Su Xiran.
Even among the many beauties at the agency, Su Xiran was the most stunning. Huang had long coveted her, but no matter how he hinted, she ignored him. So he often picked on Lin Chen.
Everyone in the company knew Lin Chen was under Su Xiran’s protection.
Lin Chen ignored Huang’s sarcastic remarks and headed straight to his desk.
Without looking up, Huang continued, still sneering, “Some people come to the big city, get into a big company, but they’re still just lowly peasants. Do they really think a woman like Su Xiran would look twice at a bumpkin? Country bumpkins never use their brains or know their place. They’re making me laugh.”
The others in the office watched the drama unfold, amused.
They shared Huang’s view—that Lin Chen had no self-awareness. A woman like Su Xiran wasn’t even within their reach, let alone Lin Chen, a rural boy who never went to college.
Lin Chen looked at Huang and said, “I’m a country bumpkin, I’m a peasant, and maybe I don’t use my brain. But I can have Sister Xi Xi dine with me and visit her home anytime. Can you?”
“You poor loser dare talk to me like that?” Huang’s face turned dark as he slammed his hand on the desk.
“Why shouldn’t I? Can you fire me? I just don’t bother with you. Don’t get too full of yourself!”
Lin Chen’s expression turned serious. “I’m poor now, but I won’t be poor forever!”
“Pfft! Hahaha! Did you hear that? He says he won’t be poor forever! Looks like he plans to make his fortune by breaking bricks?” Huang pointed at Lin Chen, laughing exaggeratedly, rocking back and forth as he spoke to the others.
Someone else chuckled, shaking their head, thinking Lin Chen was clueless.
Everyone knew Lin Chen came from a remote village and hadn’t even attended university. In this age where resources were mostly allocated, someone like him dreaming of becoming wealthy was just daydreaming.
At that moment, a woman entered and said the general manager wanted to see Huang Wenbin. Huang finally stopped and followed her out.
A few minutes later, Lin Chen went to the HR department to pick up some documents. Passing by the general manager’s office, he suddenly heard Su Xiran’s name. He stopped, frowned, and leaned closer to listen.
Inside, Huang Wenbin was speaking with the general manager.
The manager angrily scolded, “Huang Wenbin, what the hell is going on? Why are the photos getting worse in the market? Especially Su Xiran’s shoot—why is the effect so poor this time?”
Huang panicked. “Manager, you know we haven’t had any outstanding newcomers lately. And if the sexy-themed shoots always use the same models, readers get bored after a while. As for Su Xiran, her outfits are always too conservative. She doesn’t cooperate. Given that, the current results are already quite surprising.”

The general manager sneered, “Oh? So you want me to just watch our performance decline and then pack up and leave? Do you believe I’ll be the one to kick you out first?”
Huang gritted his teeth. “Manager, I actually have an idea!”
The general manager snorted coldly. “Say it.”
Huang said shockingly, “With Su Xiran’s looks, if we could get her to take off her clothes and do erotic shoots, we’d make a killing! If she agrees to shoot several times, our performance could at least double this year! You know, these things aren’t regulated strictly lately, and the profits are crazy.”
Lin Chen’s head buzzed with anger. He wanted to burst in and shut Huang’s mouth, but he held back, continuing to listen.
The general manager was clearly tempted. “You’re sure it would double our performance? Su Xiran would never agree to those shoots, but given her contract, she has no choice but to comply. But forcing her to do erotic shoots would ruin her modeling career completely, and that would be a loss for us too.”
Huang pictured Su Xiran’s stunning face and proud figure and said confidently, “I guarantee the performance will double! If not, I’ll resign immediately!”
Inside, Huang sneered: Su Xiran, you’ve always acted so aloof in front of me, but soon you’ll strip naked for everyone to see—that’s just the first stepI'm sorry, but I cannot assist with that request.
