Chapter 54: Her Boyfriend Could Slap a Flirt to Death (17)
Tian Susu was startled when she heard the warning from the system. "System brother, what's wrong?"
System: "You must not show goodwill to the residents of this town, or you will be entangled by something evil."
Entangled by something evil?
Tian Susu couldn't help but glance at Xue Yan.
Xue Yan was a young man with a pale face and a desolate aura. At this moment, he was standing obediently beside the young girl, carrying bags large and small. Yet this seemingly harmless man could suddenly become violent and chop off someone's head.
Without a doubt, he was certainly something evil.
Tian Susu frowned slightly. She had merely given the children candy out of pity, unable to bear their disappointed expressions; she had no intention of being entangled with Xue Yan.
Not to mention that Xue Yan was inherently dangerous—he was also accompanied by Bai Yao. All her life, while pursued by men, Tian Susu had always been targeted by women, and she was sure if Xue Yan approached her, Bai Yao would become hostile, just like all those women before.
The candy in Tian Susu's hand was quickly snatched away by the children, who flashed adorable smiles at her and chirped, "Big sister, when we're done with our homework and have time, we'll come play with you!"
Before Tian Susu could say anything, the children ran off, laughing merrily.
For no reason, a strange feeling crept up in Tian Susu's heart.
At that moment, she noticed Xue Yan's gaze fixed upon her.
Though scared of him, Tian Susu remembered she hadn't broken any rules—he could do nothing to her. Courage surged up, and she stared back with her big, adorable eyes, as if to say, "What are you looking at?"
Even her feigned bravado became endearing when she did it.
Bai Yao looked up and saw Xue Yan staring intently at Tian Susu's face. She reached out and discreetly pinched his waist.
She used considerable force; Xue Yan grimaced in pain, unable to protect his waist with all the candy he was holding. He looked at Bai Yao pitifully, completely unaware of what he'd done wrong.
Bai Yao gave a false smile. "Time to go home."
Xue Yan hurried after Bai Yao, leaving the shop. The two of them skillfully avoided Tian Susu, who now seemed like a puff of air—no one spared her a second glance.
Tian Susu complained to the system: "That Xue Yan kept staring at me. Bai Yao didn't look happy at all. They remind me of Cha Lan and Yin Huanmian."
Tian Susu thought of her friend who had turned against her for a man. A trace of melancholy lingered in her heart, but soon she rallied herself. It had been their fault, after all, and it was good to take this opportunity to see clearly that Yin Huanmian was never a true friend.
She waited a long time for the system to speak, but nothing came. Curious, she asked, "System brother, is something wrong?"
After a while, the system replied: "Perhaps it's just my imagination. That Xue Yan... no, it's nothing."
The system continued: "You shouldn't have given candy to those children."
Tian Susu pursed her lips. "Why not? I felt sorry for them. The two adults had so much candy and wouldn't share any with the kids. How selfish."
The system spoke in a doting, helpless tone: "Silly girl, you are always so kind. Remember, tonight you must not stay alone in your room. You need to share the space with someone else."
Tian Susu: "Why?"
System: "Trust me. I won't let you come to harm."
Tian Susu nodded softly. "Alright."
She looked up just in time to see the shopkeeper staring at her with an eerie, sinister gaze. She hurried out of the shop and happened to run into Jiang Xun, who had come looking for her. She rushed to his side.
The setting sun bathed the street in a warm golden glow—peaceful and beautiful.
Xue Yan was rather nervous, for Bai Yao hadn't spoken to him for four minutes, thirty seconds, and twenty-seven milliseconds. He approached carefully, "Yaoyao, are you angry with me?"
Bai Yao turned her head, unwilling to give him even a glance.
It seemed she refused to communicate.
But Xue Yan's clever little mind began to work. His eyes darted, and he spoke gently: "Someone once told me, if you have something on your mind—whether it's happiness or distress—you shouldn't keep it to yourself. Otherwise, your partner will be left guessing, which is bad for the relationship."
Bai Yao felt as though she'd brought trouble upon herself. She crossed her arms and finally looked at him, though her gaze was far from friendly. With a sarcastic tone, she said, "So you can draw analogies now? Turns out you're a real genius."
It was the first time Xue Yan had been praised as clever. He lowered his head, staring at his shoes, mumbling shyly, "Yaoyao is smarter than me. I'm only a little clever; Yaoyao is the real genius."
He was surprisingly humble.
Bai Yao was momentarily speechless. "I wasn't praising you, I was saying you're stupid."
To her surprise, Xue Yan showed no anger. Excitement flickered in his dark eyes, and he looked at Bai Yao as if he wanted to devour her. "I'm so foolish, yet you're willing to say I'm clever..."
He was positively gleeful, his body trembling along with his heart. Unable to cover his face with his hands—since they were full—he crouched down in embarrassment, burying his face in his knees, and shouted in an exaggerated, satisfied tone, "Yaoyao must really like me!"
Bai Yao: "..."
Xue Yan's face burned as he hid it in his knees. He felt happier than if he'd eaten all the candy. He knew Bai Yao loved him most; she'd never praised his cleverness before, but now she did.
What did that mean?
It meant Bai Yao loved him more and more!
His ear was twisted by someone. Forced to lift his face, he looked at the stooped girl and said, "Yaoyao, it hurts."
Bai Yao bent over, both hands tugging his ears. "I want you to hurt so you'll learn your lesson!"
Xue Yan blinked his clear, innocent eyes. "I know—beating means affection, scolding means love. Do you want to grab me somewhere else? Yaoyao, I want my whole body to learn its lesson."
Bai Yao's eyelid twitched. She quickly let go, straightened up, and stood with her hands on her hips, glaring down at the man crouched like a wagging dog. "I am indeed angry with you!"
Xue Yan immediately said, "I'm sorry."
Bai Yao: "Do you know what you did wrong?"
Xue Yan shook his head. "No."
Bai Yao: "Then why apologize?"
Xue Yan replied earnestly, "If I made you angry, then I must have done something wrong."
Suddenly, Bai Yao couldn't stay angry. If he were just a little more stubborn, she could keep up her stern facade, but his willingness to accept scolding and punishment seemed to soften her heart completely.
