Chapter 101: Falling in Love Turns the Whole World Into My Rival (1)
Bai Yao guessed that it must be around this time that her boyfriend would probably bring up breaking up with her.
The reason was simple: her family had gone bankrupt. Now she was struggling to pass exams and get a job at a hospital. Having finally made it through the written and oral tests, she certainly didn't have much money left to support him.
And her boyfriend was a typical freeloader. He demanded the best of everything—clothes, food, daily necessities—and if his standard of living dropped even a little, he would start with his passive-aggressive complaints.
She must have been out of her mind back then, to have taken the initiative and asked that boy, a few years her junior, to be in a relationship. Looking back now, she felt nothing but regret—deep, utter regret!
Carrying her shopping bag down the street, Bai Yao began to ponder: if he didn’t bring up breaking up, then she would have to do it herself.
Otherwise, with her meager salary, she truly couldn’t afford to keep him!
Her phone rang over and over—only he would keep calling like this, refusing to stop until she picked up.
Dragging her weary body, Bai Yao finally reached the door of her rented apartment. She pulled out her key and opened the door. Instantly, a boy in a school uniform came running out.
He complained with dissatisfaction, “You’re so slow! I’ve been waiting for you forever!”
Bai Yao glanced at him, changed into her slippers, and replied offhandedly, “I walked home, of course I’m slow.”
He asked, puzzled, “Why didn’t you take a bus?”
Bai Yao set the shopping bag on the table and answered indifferently, “To save money.”
He made a sound of acknowledgment and immediately began rummaging through the shopping bag. Not finding what he wanted, he pursed his lips, his beautiful face clouded with displeasure. “Where’s my caviar?”
Bai Yao collapsed onto the sofa in front of the fan, her voice weak. “Too expensive. I didn’t buy it.”
The boy frowned, walked straight up to her and blocked the fan, saying, “Go buy it.”
Bai Yao stretched out her foot and nudged him away. “No.”
He asked angrily, “Do you not love me anymore?”
Bai Yao lifted her eyes, and for a moment, a strange thought crossed her mind: Who wouldn’t love a stunningly beautiful boy like him?
Indeed, he had an extraordinary face.
White hair, pale skin, and the loose blue-and-white school uniform only emphasized his tall, slender, somewhat frail figure. He seemed harmless and vulnerable. The teardrop-shaped mole beneath his left eye was perfectly placed, adding a moody aura to his cool, striking features, making him look every bit like the kind of alluring spirit from a tale—one who lured the unwary with remarkable beauty.
Everyone who saw him for the first time would be drawn to his looks, and Bai Yao was no exception.
She still remembered the first time she met him.
In the corridor of a hotel, a tall girl in a white dress, strikingly beautiful, with silver-white hair tied into twin ponytails—the softly curled ends nearly reaching her waist—stood out so much that no one could ignore her.
But with such beauty also came trouble.
A man had cornered her against the wall, his words tinged with wild obsession.
She looked calmly at the man, her face so dazzling it seemed almost sharp, wearing an expression of lofty disdain. Even backed into a corner, she radiated the arrogance of a queen, utterly unfamiliar with bowing her head or yielding.
She looked very young—perhaps not even of age.
Bai Yao, acting on impulse, had stepped in front of her. If the man didn’t leave, she would call the police.
At the word “police,” a fleeting spark of reason flashed in the man’s crazed eyes. He seemed torn, powerfully drawn to the silver-haired girl, but some lingering sanity told him his behavior was wrong.
Finally, he left, full of reluctance and inner conflict.
When Bai Yao turned back, she caught a glimpse of a faint red light flickering from the girl’s body. Covering her mouth in disbelief, she hadn’t expected the world to play tricks on her—was she supposed to pursue a woman now?
The girl, freed from trouble, showed no gratitude. She crossed her arms, her expression haughty. “Hey, what kind of look are you giving me?”
It was a boy’s voice.
Bai Yao realized, belatedly, that the beautiful girl was actually a boy. She paused for a moment, then blurted out the question that would bring her no end of trouble: “Do you have someone you like? If not, do you want to try dating me?”
His pretty eyes darted around, and then he smiled. “Sure.”
His tone was flippant; love at first sight was out of the question. To him, this was just an interesting game, and he wanted to see how long Bai Yao would last at it.
In hindsight, Bai Yao should have kept her mouth shut!
Since starting to date him, she had found herself in one scrape after another. Men and women alike saw her as a rival because of him. If not for her strong survival skills, she would have been sunk by now.
Bai Yao remained silent. He pressed his lips together, the irritation in his eyes almost taking physical form, weighing the air with gloom. “You promised you’d always love me. What, are you tired of me already?”
Bai Yao sighed, collapsing on the sofa in exhaustion. “Fu Huai, I’m really tired. Let me rest for a bit.”
“No resting!” He sat down beside her, grabbing her limp body and shaking her. “My caviar! You always used to buy me caviar!”
He was young and spoiled, convinced that the world owed him his every desire. Now that Bai Yao had stopped indulging him, he simply couldn’t accept it.
Bai Yao was blunt. “That stuff’s too expensive. I can’t afford it.”
His beautiful face, those delicate features, twisted slightly. “So, in the end, you just don’t want to love me anymore!”
He demanded, “How could you not love me? You said you’d love me unconditionally, always spoil me. We haven’t even been together that long, and you’ve already changed!”
At this moment, Bai Yao felt like a salted fish, limp and lazy as he shook her. “Can you not be so unreasonable?”
“You’re calling me unreasonable!” Fu Huai sprang to his feet, his lovely eyes wide, almost shooting icy daggers. Jealousy twisted his godlike face into something fierce. “Bai Yao, have you fallen for someone else? Did some tramp seduce you? Is that why you don’t want me anymore?”
Bai Yao calmly explained, “You’re overthinking it. I haven’t found anyone else.”
Her composure only made his madness seem worse.
Fu Huai bit his lip and released her arm with a cold laugh. “Go ahead, have whoever you want outside. I don’t care at all. There’s a whole world of people ready to give me what I want.”
