Chapter 122: Discovering the Mission Gateway, Setting Out
The two exchanged a glance and sighed deeply. Suddenly, they both felt foolish. Only Zhang Qian’s squad hadn’t returned yet.
“Shu Yi, when is that team supposed to arrive?” Lin Mu asked.
“According to them, they should arrive around nine tomorrow morning,” Shu Yi replied.
Lin Mu nodded. “You’ll be in charge when they arrive, and 001 will assist. Jiang Han, Zhao Jin, come with me for a moment.”
He led the two into the vehicle, leaving Shu Yi and the others to manage the situation outside.
“How’s it out there? Encounter any tough teams?”
Lin Mu opened the fridge, looked at the drinks inside, then took out two bottles of mineral water and placed them on the table.
“About the same as here. The villages aren’t very strong; one convoy can handle them.”
With a dozen or so heavy machine guns, how could anyone dare to cause trouble? Moreover, Lin Mu had provided laser weapons, making them practically invincible.
“Are they really that weak?” he asked.
Both nodded in unison. “Very weak. They all use cold weapons; we haven’t seen a single firearm.”
Jiang Han added, “If you want to call anyone strong, I met a squad that could cast magic and use fighting energy. But against heavy machine guns, it didn’t seem to matter.”
Their magic shields and fighting energy barriers couldn’t even hold for five seconds. How could they lose with such an advantage?
Lin Mu nodded, realizing their landing zone was fairly safe—no powerful teams nearby. Shu Yi’s luck, as always, was remarkable.
“You saw the people outside, right? I’ll distribute them to you later—each of you will lead a group.”
“Captain, our team is all girls. Maybe it’s better if other squads take them,” one of them said.
Jiang Han quickly agreed, “Yeah, yeah, maybe Zhang Qian and I should just split them between the two of us.”
Lin Mu looked at Jiang Han with a hint of confusion. He understood Zhao Jin’s reluctance but Jiang Han’s suggestion was puzzling. Still, he didn’t mind; these people would eventually form other squads anyway.
Ten vehicles per squad was perfect for the current situation.
The next day.
Lin Mu sat in the driver’s seat, watching 001 scold the new convoy. Of course, every newcomer tried to harass the girls a bit at first.
Soon, the convoy of ten vehicles was thoroughly disciplined.
Including these ten, Lin Mu now had 140 vehicles and over 180 people.
He could now split them into eighteen squads—ten for combat, eight for searching the space-time gates and completing missions.
He glanced at his backpack, silently grateful for the vehicles sent by their foreign allies. Hopefully, they’d send more.
By midday, everyone had their own vehicle. Survival had honed their skills; most vehicles and their cores were already level six, saving Lin Mu a lot of trouble.
“From now on, follow Jiang Han. He’ll teach you what to do. Those who qualify this time will lead squads of their own, so work hard. If I catch anyone slacking off, don’t blame me for being harsh.”
“Yes, sir!”
Under Jiang Han’s lead, over a hundred vehicles rolled out of the town.
Lin Mu watched the convoy with satisfaction.
“Zzz~ zzz~ Captain! Captain!”
He quickly grabbed the walkie-talkie. “What’s going on?”
“We found a blue portal in a valley. It should be the mission gate Anna mentioned.”
Damn! They actually found it.
“Send me the coordinates. Guard it well. Anyone who enters the alert zone, kill on sight!”
Finally found one; no one else could snatch this opportunity.
“Yes, sir!”
Lin Mu closed the walkie-talkie and stepped outside, glancing at the empty town with a twitch of his cheek. “Where’s Zhao Jin? I remember she was here just now.”
“She just left. Said no one had checked the other side yet. She went to have a look.”
“Tell her to come back quickly.”
Good thing she hadn’t gone far; otherwise, they'd have to abandon this place temporarily.
Ten minutes later, Zhao Jin returned with her squad.
“Captain, what’s up?”
“You’re in charge of guarding this town. I’m heading out for a bit. Anna, get in the car—you’re coming with me.”
Anna was still useful inside the gate, at least because she understood it.
Shu Xin and the others stayed behind to assist Zhao Jin.
With Anna on board, Lin Mu set off toward the coordinates Zhang Qian had sent.
Half an hour later, seeing the distance, Lin Mu transformed his vehicle into helicopter mode, significantly increasing speed.
At three that afternoon, Lin Mu arrived at the target location.
From the air, he saw the blue portal below.
“Anna, is this the gate you mentioned?”
Anna’s face was full of worry. “Yes, this is it. The mission inside is mandatory. You should be careful. Once accepted, the mission can’t be canceled.”
How did they find it?
Looking at the blue portal below, Anna’s anxiety deepened. Though she was alone, she had worked with others before, entering such a gate. All those people died inside, and she was the lucky one who somehow completed the mission and escaped alive.
Since then, she never wanted to come back here.
Yet, here she was again.
The plane landed, and Zhang Qian hurried over.
“Captain, the gate’s right ahead. Do we go in now or rest first?”
“Let’s go now. I want to see what the mission is like.”
“Yes!”
After Zhang Qian left, Anna shyly approached Lin Mu.
Lin Mu eyed her warily, sensing she was up to something.
“What is it?”
“Well… um… you see…”
“Speak up or don’t bother.”
“Well, since no one’s guarding the gate from the inside, how about I stay to guard it for you?”
Lin Mu looked at her skeptically. “Are you sure you want to guard the gate, and not just avoid going in?”
Did she think changing her wording would hide her true intention?
“Ah, it’s too dangerous inside. I’m worried you’ll all die in there with no one to send messages.”
“I appreciate your concern, but there’s no way out—you’re coming with us.”
Lin Mu started the vehicle and approached the gate, followed closely by the others.
As they entered, a flash of light surrounded them, and the vehicles arrived in a vast white space.
“Welcome to the mission space. Please select the mission you wish to undertake.”
Three cards marked with numbers appeared before Lin Mu.
Staring at the cards, he fell into deep thought.
