Chapter 137: Go On, Put Up a Fight
Beams of laser fire erupted, punching hole after hole through the vampires standing before them.
"Doesn't seem that strong... Holy crap!"
The chubby youth’s eyes widened. On the screen, the scarred vampires were already healing. A vampire glanced at its own body, casually grabbed the barrel of the weapon pointing at it, and with a sharp tug, snapped it clean off.
"I thought it was something impressive—is this all you've got?"
Though he spoke with bravado, his face had turned deathly pale.
More barrels emerged from the war machine, opening fire on the swarm of vampires. However, the vampires’ reflexes were simply too fast; very few shots actually connected. Anna watched the vampires with keen interest.
"These creatures are truly fascinating, possessing a form of immortality."
Shuyi shook her head. "As long as they remain within the realm of mortals, there is no such thing as true immortality. There is always a way to eradicate them."
Soon, the group ceased using their laser rifles and waited for Lin Mu’s command. Suddenly, hundreds of silver crosses extended from the body of the war machine. Upon seeing the crosses, the vampires’ eyes filled with sheer terror.
"It’s a cross! And it’s made of mithril! Run!"
But it was already too late. A five-meter-tall cross rose from the center of the machine. A silver radiance flared, expanding instantly; the vampires closest to it turned to ash, dissipating into the air. Those further away were engulfed in flames. Of the thousands of vampires, only a dozen or so managed to escape.
Watching his kin vanish, Kane felt a lingering dread. What were they to do now? The target of these people was clearly their city. Just then, the war machine in the sky began to descend, with more silver crosses extending from its underside.
"This is bad, move!"
One of the massive crosses released a thick beam of silver light, instantly obliterating every vampire in its path. The surviving vampires scrambled desperately into the defensive wards. It was horrifying!
"What do we do? They have mithril crosses and can even fire holy light!"
"What else can we do? Kane is dead!"
"Should we run? Let's escape through the underground tunnels!"
"..."
Yes, escape! It wasn't just the combatants; even the vampires hiding within the wards began fleeing toward the tunnels. Survival was the priority. As for the city, it could be abandoned. It was just a city; if they wanted one, they could acquire another at any time. If a medium-sized city was lost, there were still small towns.
...
"Captain, it seems they’ve all run away. Should we go after them?"
Lin Mu watched the vampires flooding into the tunnels on the screen, feeling a sense of helplessness. *You guys are supposed to fight back—why are you just running away?*
"Shuyi, ask Anna how long the tunnels in a medium-sized city are."
"I don't know, I’ve never been inside a city."
Lin Mu’s mouth twitched. Fine, if she hadn't been there, she hadn't been there. Since that was the case, they would just move in directly.
"Everyone, activate the laser cannons and blast the array to pieces."
Under the bombardment of the laser cannons, the protective array didn't even last ten minutes before shattering. Lin Mu was left bewildered by this turn of events. It shouldn't have been that easy to break through a medium-sized town's defenses. Yet, the reality was right before his eyes.
"Anna, what’s the deal with the protective array of this town?"
"It’s normal. Mysterious elements are hard to come by; this array is likely ancient, and its energy has long since been exhausted."
Lin Mu had a sudden realization. Of course. The energy for protective arrays wasn't easy to source. The war machine slowly descended to the ground, then transformed back into a fleet of vehicles.
"I want you to find the warehouses immediately and secure the supplies."
Given how long the inhabitants had been here, there should be a vast amount of resources. Especially seeing how they had rushed off; it was clear they hadn't taken the time to pack.
"Yes, sir!"
They loved scavenging for supplies. Whenever this happened, Lin Mu would prepare a feast to reward them. Soon, warehouse after warehouse was discovered. The supplies here were even more abundant than what he had found in the town—ten times as much, to be precise.
"Captain, I’ve just finished the count. There are twenty warehouses, and most are full. It seems they must have plundered quite a bit; otherwise, there wouldn't be this much."
"Let’s go take a look."
Resources—these were indispensable. Looking at the warehouses, Lin Mu couldn't help but swallow hard. It wasn't just the quantity; the space itself was massive. Any single one of these warehouses was more than double the size of the ones he had seen before, and they were packed to the brim. It looked like he would need to manufacture a lot more storage crates, or there would be nowhere to put all this. The crates he had made previously were already full, and even some of the vehicle cores were stuffed with goods.
He had no choice; he just had too many supplies.
...
An hour later, Lin Mu stared blankly at the remaining ten warehouses. He muttered to himself, "Are medium-sized cities really this rich in supplies? I’ve hit the jackpot!"
The storage crates he had just finished making were already full, yet there was still so much left. He thought for a moment, returned to his vehicle, and looked at the neatly stacked crates in silence. He tried to store one of the crates inside his core, but it wouldn't work. This was the one thing Lin Mu couldn't understand—other vehicle cores could be stored, but the crates he manufactured himself could not. They all had storage capabilities, so why couldn't one fit into another?
He looked at a newly crafted crate beside him and tried using it to store the one in front of him.
*Whoosh.*
Lin Mu’s eyes widened. So that was it; only items of the same category could store each other. What was he waiting for? He quickly began consolidating the crates on the fourth floor into a single crate. Fortunately, the interior spaces of these crates were stackable. Just like that, all the crates stored on the third floor were packed away. He then crafted another hundred crates and stored all the resources from the warehouses outside.
At eight in the evening, just as they had hoped, Lin Mu prepared a lavish feast. This time, it was more extravagant than ever, especially the meat—dozens of pounds were prepared for every table.
"Eat up! There’s plenty of meat for everyone today."
He had collected every edible piece of beast meat he could find. Even if they ate until they were exhausted, they wouldn't be able to finish it all.
"Long live the Captain!"
"The Captain is the best!"
This was real meat! For people who usually had a daily quota of only two ounces, they were determined to eat until they were stuffed. Anna sipped a glass of wine, watching the scrambling crowd with interest.
"Tsk, tsk. Lin Mu really knows how to manipulate people. That meat is the kind that doesn't taste good, yet they’re eating it with such relish. Truly worthy of Lin Mu."
Shuyi rolled her eyes. "You’re no different; that wine is the stuff no one else would touch."
